The club was founded in 1888 and is one of the oldest clubs in Cheshire, and indeed, within the north of England.
After great success in the 1950’s and 60’s, the club slipped somewhat in the late 70’s and 80’s. Investment in a youth policy and the club’s joint venture with the nearby Birkenhead School to build its own astroturf pitch revitalised the club during the 1990’s.
In 1997, the previous club house at Oxton Cricket & Sports Club was opened after a massive fundraising effort and with the aid of National Lottery support. This coincided with the start of ladies hockey at Oxton. So successful have Oxton Ladies 1st XI been that they won 7 successive promotions and after playing in the North league last season are now playing Cheshire League Division 1. The club fields 4 ladies teams together with Colts and Under 15 XIs
In season 2000-01, the Men’s 1st XI finished champions of North Division 2 West and in the following season gained a second successive promotion to the Premier Division. In 2016, they gained promotion into the National league but could only manage to stay there for the one season. They again gained promotion in 2023 and manage after a good season stayed in the North Conference division.
An enhanced relationship with Calday Grange Grammar School and Calday Sports Club has allowed us to secure a much-improved home venue for the last few years. with a new pitch is to be laid for the start of the 2024-25 season.
